Dubai has confirmed a major new stage in the development of Al Maktoum International Airport — a project set to become one of the emirate’s most important aviation landmarks for decades to come. Authorities say the first phase is progressing according to schedule, with operations under the long-term master plan expected to begin in 2032.
The scale of the project is what makes it stand out. Once fully completed, Al Maktoum International Airport is expected to become the largest airport in the world, with capacity for more than 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo per year. That would strengthen Dubai’s position as a global hub for aviation, tourism, trade, and logistics.
Large-scale construction is already underway. Current contracts linked to the project are worth more than AED 13 billion. Key works include airport infrastructure, runway development, foundation structures for passenger terminals and boarding areas, as well as extensive ground preparation. More than 17,000 concrete piles have already been installed, while earthworks have exceeded 45 million cubic metres.
The next stage is expected to be even bigger. New strategic contracts worth more than AED 55 billion are planned to be awarded by the end of the year. These packages will cover major parts of the airport, including the western passenger terminal, the automated people mover system, baggage handling facilities, concourses, facades, roofing, power infrastructure, and cooling systems.
Al Maktoum International Airport is not just an aviation project. It is closely linked to Dubai’s wider economic strategy and the development of Dubai South as a major urban, business, and logistics district. The airport is designed to support the emirate’s long-term growth and help Dubai handle future demand from passengers, cargo operators, airlines, and global investors.
If the current schedule remains on track, the first major operational phase will begin in 2032. Over time, the airport is expected to become Dubai’s main aviation gateway and one of the most important transport hubs in the world.
